War-date colonel's letter written by future Brevet Brigadier General William Watts Hart Davis (1820-1910), as colonel 104th Penn. Vols., 1p. 4to., "Hd. Qrs. 104 Penna. Vols., Camp Winfield Scott, [Yorktown, Va.], May 1, 1862", to a. a. a. g. Captain George H. Johnston, reading, in part: "I am in receipt of your note…ordering an immediate report…giving reasons why there was no guard at my camp at 5 p. m. April 29th, ultimo. In reply I would state that there was a guard at my camp at the hour and the day mentioned. The regiment was in the act of changing its location when it was ordered under arms; and the guard was not transferred until it returned. Meanwhile the officer of the day visited the new encampment…I am informed…your ob'dt. servant, W. W. H. Davis, Col. 104 P. V." Minor upper left corner paper loss, not effecting text, else VG.
