Early war-date Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written, on "View of Washington City", note: that Private Dodge lovingly tinted red, white and blue the American flag at the left of the Capitol, dome, with "Map of District of Columbia," stationery, by Pvt. Stephen A. Dodge, Co. D, 3rd Maine Vols. [KIA Chantilly, Va., Sept. 1, 1862], Washington, D. C., July 1, 1861, in part: "…we had a very heavy shower. The rain came down in torrents. The Second Maine Reg. left tonight for Virginia. They will have a hard march, are gong twelve miles. Last Saturday night one of their sentry was shot the ball striking his knee, smashed the knee bone badly and had to have his leg taken off. Think he will not live. It was done by another sentry on duty near him who challenged him in fun and the other said he was a Secessionist…the other thinking his gun was not loaded (for through mistake he changed his gun and got one that was loaded) snapped it at him…Colonel [general Oliver Otis Howard sick with cholera] is getting better…[John Q.] Getchell [deserted, October, 1862] is smart again. There are not many very sick…a good many have a cold…troops are pouring in very fast. The Fourth Maine Regiment arrived Saturday. They encamped near us. They are a rowdy lest or part of them…while I am writing this morning (for I did not finish…last night) they are raising a new flagstaff and the band is playing 'Yankee Doodle.'…S. A. Dodge. The original U. S. congressman free franked transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG.
