Great battle of First Bull Run letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Stephen A. Dodge, Co. D, 3rd Maine Vols. [KIA Chantilly, Va., Sept. 1, 1862], Alexandria, Va., July 22, 1861, to his "dear father", in part: "Feeling anxious that you should hear from me as soon as possible after the battle I embrace the first opportunity to write…by the kind providence of God I am spared. We had a hard battle and had to retreat to this place…some of the Woolworth boys are killed to my knowledge. Two have not arrived here yet…suppose they went to Washington for some of the boys went there. I will name them Edward Stinson, Turner…but don't say anything about them for they may be in soon. One of our company was killed on the battle field. Our brigade lost all their teams, everything, but what they had on their backs…Woodbury is safe…I shall write again soon if possible.
