War-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Stephen A. Dodge, Co. D, 3rd Maine Vols. [KIA Chantilly, Va., Sept. 1, 1862], "Camp Howard near Alexandria, Va., Feb. 7, 1862," in part: "…Woodbury's commission for 2d Lieutenant came which was very gratifying to his friends, but Bill Higgins [William H. Higgins] is in a stew…it struck the company up awfully. Wednesday they voted Higgins in 1st Lieut. and [Alfred S.] Merrill 2nd [Lieutenant, POW Spotsylvania Court House, Va., May 10, 1864]. Wood only got four votes for 2 Lt…said Mr. Toll was dead-also Col. Baker. Have not heard from Burnside…Corp. [Henry H.] Shaw [WIA Gettysburg, July 2, 1863] feels some disappointed about the lieutenancy…we like our new rifles first rate, but we have not fired them yet. Those of the 4th Reg. say they shoot tip top. The shot is quite small take about twenty six to make a pound…just got your letters…put on Co. D, 3d Maine Reg…there were not many Woolrich boys who voted for Woodbury. I don't know what they have against him. I guess they did not want him to get ahead so fast…S. A. Dodge." Plus, 4pp. 12mo., post script, reading, in part: "Glorious News from Cario…the dispatches from Washington to Gen. Heintzelman…was read…the band played 'Yankee Doodle' double quick and 9 cheer were given for victory achieved by Commodore Foote in taking Fort Henry after 1 1/2 hours cannonading, capturing Lloyd Tillman and staff, taking 20 cannon…Secesh must come down. Another one of the recruits died last night, was sent home…that makes three of them that have died…we have got no our Austrian rifles-beech stock. The barrel is 1/8 of an inch thick. The theatre is finished and lit up with gas pipe laid all over the building…it is lit up tonight. The 4th Me. band came up and serenaded one of the Lieut. wives who recently came out here. This Lt. was formerly a member of our band. He is 1st Lt. of Co. K. He…is a good musician. I have been out on picket with him. He is a first rate fellow. The band is now in his tent taking a social drink. Five of the officers have got their wives out here and a private in our Co. named Tibbets has his wife also. A fine place for women especially private's wives. Wood is going to Alexandria tomorrow to get his sword and shoulder straps…". The original stamped transmittal cover is included.
