A great Ohio home front John Hunt Morgan raid letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Eliza W. Tomlinson, Ripley, Ohio, July 22, 1863, to her husband William Tomlinson, reading, in part: "I know not your whereabouts. It is three weeks since I received a line from you…Byers told me that he saw you up in town…the time of the Morgan Raid making for the gunboat & I presume that you did not have time to come down to see us…there is little news of interest excepting that we have captured the notorious horse thief Morgan. I hope that the news is true…I hope that they have hung him at once. Such villains as him are not entitled to mercy. They will probably parole him and let him go as they are in the habit of doing with rebels generally, We had some badly scared folks here & assure you at the time Morgan was said to be about entering town, one man…took straight up the hill-many others fled out of town. I locked up the house and went over to Mr. Noutes taking sis with me. Byers was out on the road with the rest of the brave boys for the purpose of giving the rebels a hot reception. They were very sorry that the rebels did not come as they were…to give them thunder! Byers can tell you all about it…Eliza W. Tomlinson." Minor soiling, else VG.
