B, 126th Ohio Vols., April 19, 1863, Martinsburg, West Virginia, to his sons, reading, in part: "…mother & I are comfortably situated at Suter's. Then and not until then will I be willing to lay down my arms & return to my home…we have news last evening that Fairfax Court House is taken by our forces & that the Rebels are about to make a run down this valley…let them come we will give them a warm reception I do assure you…get Minor Hawell to cut that canser out of the mare's nose again…if it is not done she will die & if she dies from the operation let her go. It will not be the first mare that ever died. You can see fifty dead horses here in one hour's ride. I am still Permit officer & will be here in town…Wm. B. Kirk…[mother, Ann, then adds]…I went up to camp yesterday…I got [to] Wheeling at five o'clock…I was glad when I saw your papa on the platform waiting to meet me…Ann…".
