Loyal Union settlers are threatened by Missouri guerrillas while on their travels to Kansas in 1864, 2pp. 8vo., letter, written by a certain "Katie", St. Joseph, Mo., June 5, [1864], to her "darling Eva", reading, in part: "…I have not had one day's nor night's rest since I left you…there to Chicago and finely have started on our way to Kan. and have got as far as here…it is Sunday and no steamers leave until tomorrow…we are staying at the famous "Patte House", but leave tomorrow noon at 1 o'clock for Leavenworth…St. Joseph is a very pretty city on the Mo. river right opposite a small town on the Kansas side. My room…has a beautiful view of the river…I do not think the Mo. river is as pleasant as the Miss. tho' the steamers are nicer and we have better accommodations. When we were on the Miss. it was a very hot day and the boat was crowded [it] was a miserable affair. Last night while riding through Mo. we came very near being attacked by the guerrillas. Mo. is full of them and last Wednesday they commenced their depredations by attacking the same trains we were on. Last night they were within two miles of us and we were only advise of it by one of our boys who had gone for a reinforcement of our cavalry. We have been in great danger and have not got out of it yet. Last night three guerrillas passed through the cars where we were but we did not know it until they had passed out. They were a horrid looking set. Please write to me right off darling…your own homesick darling, Katie." Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover addressed: "Miss. Eva Knapp, Warsaw, Wyoming Co. N. York." Near fine..
