War-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. Benjamin C. Pennell, Co. B, 17th Maine Vols. [KIA Petersburg, Va., June 17, 1864], "Camp Pitcher near Falmouth, Va., Mar. 26, 1863," in part: "…if Old Abe will send us a good lot of Ni**er troops we can settle this war up this coming summer. The Army of the Potomac is in a splendid condition. Better than were with a smart Genl. [Joseph Hooker]at our head…there is no such word as fail or Skedaddle. We are still encamped in the same place where we have been since the memorable Battle of Fredericksburg…we shall…commence our summer campaign soon…we have full confidence in our Genl. Hooker or as he is more familiarly called 'fighting Joe'…he says that if they will not interfere with his plans he will clean the South out and take every gun that they have…give my respects to all the good people of Gray…yours truly, Lieut. Benj. C. Pennell, Co. 'B,' 17th Maine Vols." Minor soiling, else VG.
