War-date Union officer's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by 1st Lt. Benjamin C. Pennell, Co. B, 17th Maine Vols. [KIA Petersburg, Va., June 17, 1864], "Camp Bullock, Va., Mar. 6th, 1864," in part: "…we broke camp last Saturday and started in the direction of Madison Court House-marched about fifteen miles…were gladly disappointed by the 6th Corps coming up in the right and going in our place…the object of the move was to draw their attention while Genl. Kilpatrick made his raid on Richmond which it seems was not very successful. Reenlisting in the army is going on very fast…nearly all the men who have served two years are going in again for another three years job with 'Uncle Sam'…our Band has arrived…tis a neat one. There are twenty four pieces and all are experienced players…with this and our drum corps which has sixteen members we have music enough…love to all…Cousin Benj." Near fine.
