SCHOFIELD, John McAllister (1831-1906) was an American soldier who held major commands during the American Civil War. He later served as U.S. Secretary of War under Presidents Andrew Johnson and Ulysses S. Grant, and Commanding General of the United States Army. Autograph Letter Signed "J.M. Schofield" 2-1/2pp. octavo on Headquarters Division of the Atlantic letterhead, March 28, 1887, addressed to Edward Bok, publisher of Henry Ward Beecher's speeches and later editor of the The Ladies' Home Journal. It reads in part: "....I was not so fortunate as to have any personal acquaintance with Mr. Beecher. yet his personality has for many years seemed nearly as familiar to me as that of anyone with whom I have been closely associated. I have long esteemed him as one of the very greatest men of the Age. In him, great intellectual endowment was most happily united with nobleness of soul...Mr. Beecher's memory must ever be dear to all patriotic Americans and especially to every Union Soldier..." Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) was an American Congregationalist clergyman, social reformer, and speaker, known for his support of the abolition of slavery, his emphasis on God's love, and his 1875 adultery trial .
