Official Confederate Government letter, 1p. 4to., written, on Confederate States of America, War Department stationery, by Secretary of War GEORGE WYTHE RANDOLPH (1818-1867), Richmond, Va., Oct. 9, 1862, to future brigadier general, Staunton post commander Col. Henry B. Davidson, reading, in full: "You will remove the military from the Court House and Clerk's office at Staunton and, if necessary, place a guard to keep the building clear of trespassers belonging to the Army. Respectfully, Geo. W. Randolph, Secretary of War." Overall VG.
