Benjamin Morgan's in Clarke Co. on August 20, 1864, 4pp. octavo pencil, July 21, 1864, and reads in part: "...20 of our comp with Lieut Groton went down in the Yankee lines and brought out corn and oats for our horses. We saw several Yankees but they did not fire on us. The Yankees are still shelling Petersburg but they do not accomplish anything. The Yankees are digging or trying to undermine our breast works by digging under them but our men are digging too and they say they will meet them half way. Our men are in fine spirits and they say they are going to try and wind Grant up where he is. Deserters are coming in every day they say Grant's army is suffering greatly for want of water and from sickness....Lieut Moss has not returned from home yet he was shot in the arm but he says he will try and get back to the company in 2 weeks...."
