ALEXANDER MARTIN ALEXANDER MARTIN (1740-1807). Fourth and Seventh (Twice) Governor of the U.S. State of North Carolina from 1782-1784 and 1789-1792. Martin resisted pressure to confiscate British Loyalist Tory property, instead advocating its return to all except for North Carolina's more infamous Tories. July 24, 1762-Dated French and Indian War Period, Promissory Note Signed by Alexander Martin, Governor of North Carolina and a U.S. Senator. Manuscript Document Signed, "Alex Martin" on the docket of a Penal Bond marked "Judgement" measuring 5.5" x 7.25," 1 page, Very Fine. There is some light overall toning yet sound and attractive with bold brown writing and signatures on laid period paper. Frederick Fraley, whose name is spelled several different ways on this document: "Promise(s) to pay to Edmund Fanning or his Order the Sum of Four pound five Shillings proclamation Money for Value received to which payment well & truly to be made... in the penal Sum of Eight pounds Ten Shillings...". Signed, "Frederick Fraley" (in an unusual style), witnessed by Will(iam) Reed (who signs again on the reverse), and Signed on the Docket by Alexander Martin.
