BEAUREGARD, Pierre Gustave Toutant (1818-1893) was a Confederate general officer who started the American Civil War by leading the attack on Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. WISE, Henry Alexander (1806-1876) was an American lawyer and politician from Virginia. He was a U.S. Representative and Governor of Virginia, and US Minister to Brazil. During the American Civil War, he was a general in the Confederate States Army. PEGRAM, John (1832-1865) was a career soldier from Virginia who served as an officer in the United States Army and then as a brigadier general in the Confederate Army during the American Civil War. He became the first former U.S. Army officer to be captured in Confederate service in 1861 and was killed in action near the end of the war. ELZEY, Arnold Elzey Jones Jr. (1816-1871), known for much of his life simply as Arnold Elzey, was a soldier in both the United States Army and the Confederate Army, serving as a major general in the American Civil War. At First Manassas, he became one of the few officers ever to receive an on-the-field promotion to general by President Jefferson Davis. He commanded a brigade in Stonewall Jackson's Valley Campaign, and was badly wounded at Gaines Mill, ending his active field career. War-date Letter Signed "Henry A. Wise" as Brigadier General, 4pp. quarto, Camp Wappoo, September 25, 1863, days after the Battle of Chickamauga, addressed to Major Chestney, and reads in small part: "...Capt G.A. Wallace Co. F 59th Va. Regt on the 9th inst applied that he with one Sergeant and one Private be detailed with a leave of absence for 15 days to recruit for his company...Both of these applications were disapproved by both Genl. Elzey and myself. On the morning of the 14th inst just as the orders were being executed to move to Charleston, S.C. Capt Wallace again urged his applications for the detail and for leave..." with endorsements by General Beauregard, General Elzey, AAG Pegram and Generl Wise. Fine condition.
