SEDDON, James Alexander (1815-1880) was an American lawyer and politician who served two terms as a Representative in the U.S. Congress, as a member of the Democratic Party. He was appointed Confederate States Secretary of War by Jefferson Davis during the American Civil War.War-date Document Signed "James A. Seddon" 1pp. quarto, Confederate States of America, War Department, Richmond, Virginia, October 28, 1864, addressed to Major Campbell, Corps of Engineers, and reads in part: "...You are hereby informed that the President has appointed you Major Corps of Engineers In the Provisional Army in the service of the Confederate States: to rank as such from the nineteenth day of October one thousand eight hundred and sixty four. Should the Senate at their next session advise and consent thereto, you will be commissioned accordingly..." Fine condition.
