BURNS, John Lawrence (1793-1872), veteran of the War of 1812, became a 69-year-old civilian combatant with the Union Army at the Battle of Gettysburg during the American Civil War. He was wounded, but survived to become a national celebrity. Letter Signed "John L. Burns" 1pp. octavo, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, March 30, 1864,and reads in part: "...I have just returned home and find your letter. This accounts for not acknowledging it sooner. Not being a good penman, I have a friend to answer for me, subscribing my own name..." Mounted with period newspaper reports and images of Burns. Very good condition.
