WINDER, John H. (1800 - 1865) Confederate brigadier general and commander of the Confederate Libby Prison, Belle Isle and the notorious prison at Andersonville. He escaped the hangman, dying just before war's end. Autograph Letter Signed, "Jno. H. Winder Brig. Genl." 1-1/2p. quarto, Camp Sumter, Anderson, Georgia, July 21, 1864, addressed to General Braxton Bragg in Montgomery, Alabama, it reads: "I have been directed by the Secretary of War to confer with you as to a location for a new prison. IT is impossible for me to leave the post as present. I send Capt Vowles [Comdt of Millen] and with him the telegram of the Secretary of War and one from Genl. Cooper. There is a serious objection to Cahaba, that is the great scarcity of suitable timber. To procure it would consume a great deal of time and incur a very great expense. Silver Run, twenty miles from Columbus, possesses every requisite, but it is liable to raids. On the Macon and Brunswick roads in Pulaski County a suitable place might be found, and plenty of provisions. Then again, it might be placed between Brachville and Charleston. Be pleased to send Capt. Vowles any instructions you may have for me…" Tipped, else VG.
