Rare broadside "GLORIOUS NEWS! THE END OF THE WAR. LET THE PEOPLE REJOICE. SURRENDER OF LEE AND HIS WHOLE ARMY" 1pp. 7-1/4"x10", with text of the "OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT" and reprinting General U.S. Grant's missive to Secretary of War Edwin Stanton of April 9, 4pm, and reads "General Lee surrendered the army of Northern Virginia this afternoon upon the terms proposed by myself..." with the text of Stanton's response to Major General Dix, April 9th, 9pm, that reads "This department has received the official reports of the surrender, this day, of General Lee and his whole army to Lieut. Gen. Grant, on the terms proposed by General Grant..." With pencil manuscript at bottom "Prepared at midnight Apr 9th 1865. How are you Rebs." and pencil inscription on verso "Up all night - glorious times - the city illuminated - guns fired - bells rung for two hours - everybody standing on their heads. Yerga." Fine condition.
