c. 1856-1857 Civil War Period Use, Rare Military Contract Savage & North, "Figure 8", Navy Model Percussion Revolver, Steel and Brass with Walnut grips, Very Fine. This is a very important Navy pistol as only 250 were made of this variation and only 100 Military pistols were produced to fill the U.S. Ordnance Department order. This pistol is number 72 of the 100. A very rare Civil War Period Military Contract Savage & North, "Figure 8", Navy Model Percussion Revolver. According to the FLAYDERMAN'S GUIDE, this Revolver is the second variation of the First Model. It has a unique round shaped brass frame being with an early type rammer assembly. It has a.36 caliber, 7" long octagon barrel marked on the top flat "E. SAVAGE. MIDDLETOWN, CT/H.S. NORTH. PATENTED. JUNE 17TH, 1856". Round steel 6-shot cylinder. Two-piece walnut grips with humpbacked profile that has been checkered and remnants of the military inspector cartouches are visible on both sides. The wood grip scales have some loses around the screw that secures them to the brass frame. All steel parts are smooth greyish-brown in color with about 30% original blue finish remaining (some areas more visible in protected areas). The brass has a rich yellow-olive natural patina. An exceptional pistol worthy of any Civil War museum collection. (According to the FLAYDERMANS GUIDE, 9th Edition, page 370, (7A-091) this rare type pistol is valued in FINE condition at $11,000.00 in 2007.)
