Hand-Carved / Scrimshawed Powder Horn, Fine. This War of 1812 Period, Hand-Carved Powder Horn measures about 9". Carving depicts; Flowering Vines, a double-headed Crowned Eagle, Three-masted Warship under sail, what appears to be an official Building flying a Flag and "May 18 1814, A J", (missing some details due to flaking). No stopper. Deep golden honey-tan on the engraved areas with rich dark brown on the narrow stopper end, showing some scattered chipping and wear from actual use. The double-headed eagle is the symbol most strongly associated with Russia. However, throughout history it has featured in many cultures around the world, including Ancient Persia, the Holy Roman Empire, the Byzantine Empire, the Venetian Republic, and Scandinavia. Therefore, we surmise this owner was likely an early immigrant to America.
