LINDBERGH, Charles Augustus (1902-1974) was an American aviator, military officer, author, inventor, and activist. At the age of 25 in 1927, he went from obscurity as a U.S. Air Mail pilot to instantaneous world fame by winning the Orteig Prize for making a nonstop flight from New York City to Paris. Lindbergh covered the ?33 1/2-hour, 3,600-statute-mile (5,800 km) flight alone in a purpose-built, single-engine Ryan monoplane, the Spirit of St. Louis. While the first non-stop transatlantic flight had been made 8 years earlier, this was the first solo transatlantic flight, Document Signed, "Charles A. Lindbergh, July 26, 1927" on the first page of an 1927, 80pp autograph book owned by Helen Miners. The autographs are personal, some with advice. The provenance is supplied by the owner in an 1983 letter enclosed. In part, her letter states "The signature was inscribed in my autograph book during his overnight stay at the home of the Hartness/Flanders family in in Springfield, Vermont. ..." Accompanying the book are three real photo postcards showing Lindbergh with the Vermont Governor Hartness. All RPPCs are inscribed on the reverse. One of the RPPC reports "The autograph was given here. Charles Lindbergh with Gov. Hartness on the lawn of the Governor's home during goodwill tour-Springfield Vermont. 1927. Former Governor Hartness was an aviator. Hartness first flew in Germany in 1913 in a hydrogen-filled airship, designed by Ferdinand von Zeppelin. In 1914, Hartness learned to fly a 35 horsepower (26 kW) Wright Flyer near Garden City, New York. Hartness then obtained his pilot's license from the Aero Club of America. He encouraged, and served as president of, the Vermont Aero Club. He donated the land for the Springfield Aerodrome to the state, establishing the first airfield in Vermont-Hartness State Airport. After his trans-Atlantic flight, Charles Lindbergh toured the United States in the Spirit of St. Louis to promote aviation. He landed in Springfield on July 26, 1927 in his visit to Vermont and spoke at a large gathering at the airport. Hartness hosted Lindbergh at his home.
