MEREDITH, Samuel, (1741 – February 10, 1817) was an American merchant from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was a delegate for Pennsylvania to the Continental Congress from 1786 to 1788. President Washington appointed him Treasurer of the United States, and he held this office from 1789 until his retirement on December 1, 1801. Signed Check, “Sam Meredith” in brown ink on fine-laid paper, Bank of the United States, April 2, 1796, 2” x 8”, Choice Very Fine. Paid to B. Newbold $200. A native of Philadelphia, Meredith was a merchant in the years before the Revolution, actively supporting the patriot cause and signing the non importation agreements in 1756. He worked his way up the ranks in the Revolution, resulting in his prestige when he was elected to the Pennsylvania legislature. George Washington appointed him the first US Treasurer in 1789. Cut cancellations do not affect signature.
