A Pair Of Handbills issued by Thomas G. Jones, Colonel, Second Regiment Alabama State Troops, written to Northern Newspapers, defending Alabama's action in the recent election. Each are 1pp., 8-1/2" x 11", the 1st written to the New York Times. In small part Jones disputes the claims that the militia was used "to terrorize one colored election inspector and drive him from the polls while they stuffed the boxes, they had to bring a company of militia and thirty to forty armed citizens ... ostensibly to protect whites from intimidation by blacks. They emptied the boxes and then stuffed them with Democratic votes by the handful, openly and plainly .. insight of scores of people. ... yet the impudence to claim that the 116 blacks had so intimidated the 540 whites that the seizure of the polls by military was made necessary." He then continues, " It is due to the truth to say that these statements are wicked and unblushing falsehoods. I notice these because they reflect directly upon myself and command. ... Black and white were assured that the sole purpose of the military was to prevent disturbance and riot, that all would be alike protected ... whoever attempted violence would be promptly arrested and punished ...." The 2nd is written to the Philadelphia Times and contains similar retort to The Times election coverage.
