History advises that the Black Hodges had assaulted a young woman names Winnie Harmon the preceding evening, inflicting serious injury from the rough handling. He was hunted, found, arrested and jailed. A mob used sledge hammers to break into the Smith County Jail, seizing Jim Hodge…," who was held on a rape charge. At the stroke of noon, Hodges was lynched.
