A highly pro-Confederacy Alabama patriot's letter, 3pp. 4to., written by Daniel Monroe Fulenwider, "Clairbourne [Alabama], Jan. 23, 1861, Independa State of Ala., Head Quarters, Ala. Militia 26 Regiment, 4 Brigade, 2 diveson," addressed to Col. D. H. Morgan, Cincinnati, Ohio, reading, in part: "Dear Sir - their is no chance for any compromise with [the] North - the South is determined to stand up [for] her wrights [even] if she may perish in the attempt. We are one people in the South and stad as a unite to defend our wrights. We have taken all the forts and arsenals in Ala. and have 4 thousand men at Pensacola, Fla. to take the forts. We have in possession the Navy Yard and two of the forts - their is but one fort left - it has only 165 men which we have given them but a short time. If they do not surrender it. We will take it at all hazards. If the government should attempt to coresion. It will be a hard time. Their is nothing else but military men pass[ing] up and down [in] every boat. We are armoring the state and putting it in readiness every hour. We have 5 hundred men at work in Fort Morgan and the state of Ala. will have four or 5 thousand of a standing army always ready to meet any Black republican force. No man can stay in the South without belonging to a military company and subject to the orders of the governor of the state. We have all got our (armes) and are ready at any moment's warning to meet the North - there is not a chance for the Black republicans to do a thing with us. Their is no business doing here yet and there is little chance for a reaction soon as their is not much money in the country. Your respectfully, D. M. Fulenwider. PS: We do not allow a man to come down from North of [the] Mason Dixon line. We are determined never again to let a thieving Black republican to tread our shores. We do not give the[m] a tar & feathers. Nothing but the 'Hemp' [noose.] Fulenwider is also listed has having served in the 2nd Alabama Battalion Light Artillery which mainly served in Mississippi and at Mobile until the end of the war.
