A good war-date Southern patriot's letter, 1p. 4to., written by William Capers, Sr, [Savannah, Ga.], April 16, 1862 with original stamped transmittal cover addressed, "Mr. Louis Manigault, care Messers Middleton, Charleston, S. C.", reading, in part: "-yesterday, 15th inst. I got out to the camp 600 bushels [of] rough rice which is safely stored in the new barn & in case I hear of the d-n Yankees pilfering any of the plantations [I] will move all I can - hope will meet your father's views. We had better get 200 bushels more rice flour for the camp & bring it directly to the camp. We have had a long - summer to pass & what is not done now will not be easy accomplished - every article of yours shall be taken from - here. Mrs. Manigault takes good care of - your furniture. Attends to it in person, no damned Yankee shall rejoice over anything [which] I can put out of their reach - since the fall of [Fort] Pulaski which I believe with many others 'was sold.' No charity can they expect at my hands should peace be declared tomorrow. It will never alter my hate. Your kind offer towards my children I truly appreciate & have long since viewed you as a friend. [I] will be quite glad to see you but be prudent for a while. Written in haste - Wm. Capers, Sr." Near fine.
