An extremely rare and unusual war-date leave-of-absence issued to Quartermaster Clerk John C. Wade, 1p. 8vo., Danville, Va., April 11, 1865, reading, in part: “Leave is granted Jno. C. Wade a clerk in this office to visit his family in Montgomery County, Virginia and to join the Department at any time when the same shall [re]locate in the South…”. Amazingly, this document was issued just one day after the Army of Northern Virginia laid down its arms and shows that the Confederate government hadn’t entirely given up hope of continuing to operate somewhere in the deep South. Usual wear showing signs of being carried for a long period of time, else very good.
