Print, 24” x 21” in modern frame, titled, “The Room in the McLean House at Appomattox C.H., in which GEN. LEE surrendered to GEN. Grant”. The eighteen officers are identified just below the image and include, Lee, Grant, Custer, Marshall, Sheridan, etc. These prints are usually credited to Major and Knapp, New York. But this piece, t is important to note the credit line as follows, “Entered according to the Act of Congress in the year 1867, by Wilmer McLean in the Clerk’s office ... Eastern District of Virginia”. Wilmer McLean, owner of the house where the surrender was signed, commissioned this print as a way to raise money to pay for property damage that occurred during the war. Lee is accompanied by two aides, while Grant is surrounded by the cream of the Union officer corps, including George Custer, Philip Sheridan, George Meade and Edward Ord. McLean’s hopes for restitution were in vain; he abandoned the property in 1867, and the house was sold at public auction two years later. The officers appear is this order and are ID'd below the print: John Gibbon, Geo. Custer, Cyrus Comstock, Willoughby Babcock, Humphrey Marshall (CSA), Richard Taylor (CSA), R.E. Lee (CSA), Phil Sheridan, U.S. Grant, John Rawlins, Chas. Griffin, Geo. Meade, Ely Parker, James Forsyth, Theo. Bowers, Wesley Merritt, Edw. Ord
