Endorsed Letter "J.H.H. Ward, Rec'd Sept 16/52" on 2pp. letter written, stationary of State of New York Commissary General's Office, New York, September 15, 1852, in small part, The arms and equipment referred to by Col. Wood were issued by Commissary General Stewart in Sept 1849 which accounts for the "US" plate, the "S.N.Y." plate was adopted by Gen'l Lee as being more appropriate to State Troops." John Henry Hobart Ward (1823 - 1903), brigadier-general, he enlisted in the 7th U. S. infantry in 1841 and passed through the various grades of promotion until he was appointed sergeant-major in Aug., 1845. He was stationed at Corpus Christi, participated in the siege of Fort Brown and the battles about Monterey under Gen. Worth, and was subsequently under Gen. Scott at Vera Cruz, Cerro Gordo and Huamantla. At the commencement of the Civil War he recruited the 38th N. Y. infantry, and was its first colonel. He took part in the first battle of Bull Run, in which his regiment lost 126 men, and participated in all the battles of the Peninsula under McClellan, including Yorktown, Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Glendale and Malvern hill to the James river. When the army returned from the Peninsula he was engaged in the battles of the second Bull Run, Groveton and Chantilly, and on Oct. 4, 1862, was promoted to be brigadier-general of volunteers. He was assigned to the Army of the Potomac, commanded the 2nd brigade, 1st division, 3d army corps, at Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Auburn mills, and during the first day at Gettysburg, and on the second and third days at Gettysburg, Kelly's Ford and Wapping Heights (Manassas Gap) he was in command of the 1st division. He also commanded a brigade at Mine run, Locust Grove, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and in a number of minor campaigns, and was mustered out of service July 21, 1864.
