2021-10 Raynors HCA Live
This lot is closed for bidding. Bidding ended on 10/15/2021
A great raw recruit's letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., Newton, [New Jersey], Aug. 5, [1862], to his parents, reading, in part: "When I left home I was almost sure that we would not be successful in raising the men & money. I did not bid you goodbye thinking I would be back in the afternoon. We come very near not getting off. It was not determined until dark & after a great deal of trouble & consolation we got started. We had a five mile ride by moonlight. The bits were in good spirits - we have been - this forenoon being examined & sworn in & are now in reality Soldiers of the United States army. Genl. Edwards stands by me, carpet sack in hand, while writing this letter & assures me that he is going along with us and is determined to use every effort in our behalf but he may not succeed & I may not get the office I desire - the boys are ready to start to camp - Charles." Light toning, else VG.
