Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., Frelinghuysen, [Newark N. J.], Sept. 7, [1862], to his family, reading, in part: "-we reached camp - & were immediately mustered into service. After receiving our blankets - we were marched back to Newton & quartered - in a large building in Elizabeth street (which some of the boys treed Hen House Hall. The Hen Roost & other names not very significant of luxury & refreshment. The Vernon boys are very well spoken of by all the citizens of Newton. Said they were the most gentlemanly set of volunteers that had gone from Newton - yesterday our company was united with another company of forty men from Millbourne, Essex Co. The consolidation was brought about by Genl. Edwards much to the benefit of the Vernon boys. It is fully determined that Daniel [Bailey also 123rd USCT] shall be captain - yesterday every man recd. the bounty which he agreed to take. I had a busy time writing letters are the men recd. their money - John Rysdyke is the happiest man I have seen this morning & is creating quite a little merriment in camp. He has just come from the Sutler's where he purchased a bottle of pain killer for six pence. Gave to pay for it twenty five cent piece & recd in change a fifteen cent shin plaster which he believed to be a fifteen dollar bill. He is now showing the boys his extremely good luck & receiving feigned congratulations - Genl. Kearney is buried today. His remains were taken from here to New York City yesterday under a military escort & his funeral is preached today. His residence is about two miles from this camp - our camp is situated about half mile from the town near the Morris & Essex canal. There are about two regiments & a half on the ground now (2500) & more coming in every day - [much more interesting content] -Charles Baxter." Light toning, else VG.
