Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., "Camp Kearny, [East Capitol Hill, D. C.], Thursday afternoon, Oct. 23, 1862," to his family, reading, in part: "we with other regiments were ordered out on brigade drill - we have lived in a continual cloud of dust for the past few days - I was very sorry indeed that I was gone when Pa & Asa came to see me - Pa must have been very much disappointed (after taking so much trouble) but not more than I was myself when I had to leave - our tents are the best on Capitol Hill - an officer's tent was given to the orderly & myself. I tried it for a day or two & finding it less comfortable than the private's tents gave up my place to another - we have another new member in our Co., a gentleman by the name of Walden, who was elected 1st Lieut. (the election being held by a major duly authorized for the business) - but the company [he was elected to] happening to become a special object of dislike to Col. Van Vorot, he disorganized it & divided it among other companies giving the commissioned officers no other alternative but to go into the ranks or go home. Walden comes into our Co. as a private. Our arms were inspected today for the purpose of being condemned - service was held up on the parade ground. There being three Regts. present besides our own - each Regt. forming one side to a hollow square. The regimental chaplains, colors & a No. of choice singers in the center - one of the tunes we sang was America - it sounded splendid being sung by a full chorus of male voices & in the open air." Unsigned, with an original transmittal cover, addressed to his brother, is included. A bit light, else VG.
