Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., "Camp Casey near Fairfax Seminary, [Va.], Friday evening, Nov. 14, 1862," to his family, reading, in part: "-concerning our going in the expedition under Genl. Banks to Texas - it is quite probable we will not accompany it. Genl. Banks has made application to the Secretary of War for our Regt. & Genl. Casey (under whose command we now are) refused to let us go. While we are in Casey's Division we are held for the protection of W. - we go on picket duty again on Monday - we hear tonight four companies of our Regt. are to receive Springfield rifles. Co. F is included among the four - I am afraid there is something wrong going on in N. V. [North Vernon] John Case - recd. a call from Mrs. Vanstrand - for the purpose of raising money for bedding for our camp - what does this mean? Are you folks up there coming the community for money that you may send us things we do not need - whomever is engaged in it must stop it at once. I want you to have nothing to do with it. Remember all a soldier has he must carry on his back - Chas. J. Baxter." Negligible soiling, else VG
