Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., "Camp near the mouth of Acquia Creek, Monday evening, Dec. 8, 1862," to his family, reading, in part: "-we left Camp Seminary - embarked sailing 8 miles down the river to Acquia Creek - the Potomac was was in sight the most of time - what a long, long night - how they thought of the comforts of home as they stood around the cheerless camp fires made doubly disagreeable by a blinding smoke-the line officers took possession of an old darkies cabin, much to the poor fellow's discomfort ere as they kept him carrying wood for them the most of the night-I heard the Col. say we would go either to Fredericksburg or Fortress Monroe, though going to Fredericksburg is a disputed privilege as it is yet to be taken from the rebels. Three weeks ago the ground we now occupy was in their possession-Chas. J. Backster." Minor soiling, else VG.
