Union soldier's letter, 3pp. 8vo., written by Orderly Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., "Camp near Stanford, Ky., April 13, 1863," to his sister, reading, in part: "-we left Camp Dick Robinson - & marched all the way to this place (a distance of 21 miles) during the day. The roads were very dusty & the 27th being in the rear of the Brigade were obliged to travel in a perpetual cloud. I think it a piece of imposition & abuse to use men as we have been treated during the two last marches. We arrived - hungry, weary & footsore & before we had an opportunity to strike our tents a shower of rain came on us making our condition deporable enough - considering the lads that we carried it is a source of wonderment - that we accomplished the march - the enemy lies in force on the opposite bank of the Cumberland R. near Mill Spring which is fifty miles from here - all the ground we are traveling over now will have to be retraced at the expiration of our term - Chas. J. Baxter." Minor spotting, else VG
