Union soldier's letter, 2pp. 4to., written by Orderly Sergeant Charles J. Baxter, Co. F, 27th New Jersey Vols., "Monticello, Ky., May 4, 1863," to his sister, reading, in part: "-we left camp near Stanford - & marched eight miles on the road to Somerset - we delayed several hours for Genl. carter - I leered the object & strength of our expedition which possessed an infantry & cavalry force, each about 23 hundred in number also two batteries - at the supposed fording place it was found to be not less than ten feet in depth. Some of the cavalry swam across & had a slight skirmish with the enemy. As no place could be devised to get the infantry or artillery across we - retraced our steps back to Somerset - to the Cumberland finding - a couple of old scows on which the whole force managed to cross, but with miserable difficulty - Saturday Mulford's cavalry drove the enemy ahead of them with occasional skirmishing - we followed on coming across a dead or wounded horse occasionally - we are at present supporting a battery on an eminence that overlooks & commands the town - do not - allow yourselves to feel uneasy about my welfare. Should we push much further on in the enemy's country it would not be attended by severe fighting -Chas. J. Baxter." Minor spotting, else VG
