War-date Union NCO's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by 1st Sergeant Job Barnard, Co. K, 73rd Indiana Vols., "Head Quarters Co. K, 73d Ind. Vols., Triana, Alabama, June 16, 1864," to "My Dear Flora," reading in part: k"-got fixed up again. I have pleasant quarters here and also the whole company - we were just approaching cherry season at Lavergne - here we are just a little too late. The cherries being all consumed by the 63d Ills. the regt. we relieved . We will wait with them for the peaches and apples - the [Tennessee] river is wide here and banks picturesque . I have not been about the town much, but have seen several good looking people & think the intelligence of the people is above par for this country. We have a school near by also. I have seen the school Ma'am once, but was not smitten. I heard one of her little girls singing, "Just before the Battle, Mother" - and was led to think favorably of the teaching and teacher. It sounded quite strange to hear such a song sung by a little girl so far south. There are several truly loyal men here, though and loyal woman. Many from East Tennessee - Follett - is well; thinks of getting a furlough for a few days - John is here with me. He has just been brushing up and tells me to say to whoever I am writing to that he is going out in the city to "take notes" and get acquainted with the people. Perry lives near by. He is boarding down town, with Col. Walker at a man's house by the name of Laverty. They are East Tenn. folks. Flora, don't get the "blues" anymore - "laugh and grow fat." It may be that I will home agin this fall if I should re-enlist - I don't know whether to enlist again or not, but rather think I shall not. I don't want to be a soldier for life. It is too changeable for me - besides it doesn't suit my taste - I am yet undecided as to what I shall be - it has always looked like a thing of too much uncertainty, this planning - when I am liable almost every day to get one of J. Davis' "blue pills" in my body - Col. Walker has not had us reciting in the tactics any yet - Job." VG
