A friend of Pvt. James O. Johnson, Co. H, 138th Ohio Vols., writes a letter, 4pp. 8vo.,"Mount Carmel, [Ohio], July 24, [1864]," to his soldier friend, in small part: "-there is now another call for 500,000 more men by the 5th of Sept. next. Where the men are to come from I do not know how [or] that country can spare them. God can only tell. I verily believe that - we are an undone ruined and bankrupt nation fighting abroad, divided at home - and strife is enough to shatter the foundations of any Government that ever existed on the face of God's earth - the 5th of August next is set apart by Congress for fast and prayer in order to have the decrees of almighty God concerning us and the rebellion reconsidered and set aside by infinite wisdom or turned in our favor which thus far has been by this acknowledgment [been] against us - now I do honestly think you and all the true disciples of Christ had ought to pray for our poor despotic rulers and pray also that God - would give us better ones, but I do not believe that all the good men in North America with all the logic and sound policy can ever restore our Union again to its former greatness & grandeur - I am - torn in anguish - in regards to our distracted country out of all patience with Lincoln and his minions and at the same time wish the war was ended and Jeff Davis converted to his right mind [and] peace restored so that millions of hearts might cease to break with grief and eyes to flow with tears of grief - we are praying for you.
