A Union soldier suffers from mental-health concerns letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James O. Johnson, Co. H, 138th Ohio Vols., "Cherry Stone Point, Va., July 25, 1864," written to his wife, in part: "-oh how thankful I was to read - that you was still praying in faith that God would be with me here in Virginia and preserve and sustain me - I have been somewhat discouraged at times - Billy Johnson said well no matter what he said I guess I am a little tired of being from wife and friends. Billy is my very best friend and does me many a little kindness that none but a soldier knows how to appreciate - I get discouraged pretty easy. I hope that I will be better in a few days. I got some medicine from the Dr. of the regiment and it does me good. I feel quite comfortable now - the Dr. here thinks I am a kind of [a] humbug and don't need much only good spirits. Well I will try to keep them up - there is 2 counties of Virginia on this side of the Bay - they ought to belong to Maryland - [our] work has been light and will be only to guard a few prisoners - James O. Johnson." Plus; a 1p. 4to., cough medicine receipt, reading, in part: "Dose 1/2 teaspoonful whenever the cough's troublesome - simple syrup Ziv., tincture of cannibis indica, Nitric acid qts. xvj. - large bottle one dollar -small bottle 75 cents - I owe you for one pr. shoes price 85 cents. Paid on Med. .50 cents. J. W. Wzarts. Minor soiling, else VG. (2 pieces.)
