A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James O. Johnson, Co. H, 138th Ohio Vols., "Cherry Stone Point, [Va.], July 26, 1864," written to his wife, in part: "-you may wonder why I don't write more description of country. I confess I have no interest in looking at this wasted land - everything has such a wild and desolate appearance. The sandy farms - you could not find a field or woodland here that was not perhaps 1/2 sand. Some almost all poor white sand and don't perhaps raise 20 bushels of corn to the acre - the people as far as I have talked with them are clever and obliging in these 2 counties of Virginia. The boys, many of them, think they are not loyal. They are kind and humane anyhow - and I cannot feel that it is right to raid on their crops as is too often done - an old man whose house I visited gave me as many pears as I wanted and entertained me for an hour or more in conversation - showing me some engravings of noted places in Virginia some of which I have seen - James O. Johnson." Minor soiling, else VG.
