A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James O. Johnson, Co. H, 138th Ohio Vols., Drummondtown, [Va.], August 12, 1864, written to his wife, in part: "-our full time it will be 9 days yet - we will be mustered out at the expiration of our time then we will start - I hear something about a raid from the rebs along the rail roads which may delay us - this has been a hard service. We have - shown the whole world at least Virginia and dragged from one end to the other - much of the ground we traveled twice over, 5 times on the bay and almost shut out from land - several times. We moved just a day or 2 before a fight. At White House the day after we left there was quite a severe fight. A few days after we left Spring Hill the fort was attacked. I was out on the front line once and witnessed the artillery fighting and saw the tremendous shells burst and the rifle of the sharpshooters as they sent the deadly ball to some sighted victim - I am heartily tired of the confusion and noise of camp, garrison and war in any form. I long for the quiet of domestic life - James O. Johnson. The original stamped transmittal cover is included. Minor soiling, else VG.
