A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 4to., written by Pvt. James O. Johnson, Co. H, 138th Ohio Vols., "White House Landing on the Pamunky River, Va., June 11, 1864," written to his wife, in part: "-we are compelled to rise at the tap of the drum. We go to eat by regulation to bed the same and are called up by the same drum, drum till it has lost all its music - we left Washington on Monday traveled down the Potomac to the Chesapeake Bay and was soon out of sight of land - landed at the White House or rather the ruins of it as all has been destroyed but the chimneys. This is the house where Washington first saw his wife and was afterwards married to her in a small church just below which is also in ruins. Indeed the whole country is ruined and desolate, no fences, stock or anything of interest. I hope never to see my native state destroyed and ruined by this cruel war - direct your letter to Washington City again to follow the regiment - Jas. O. Johnson. Moderate soiling, else VG.
