The brother of Pvt. James O. Johnson, Co. H, 138th Ohio Vols., writes a letter, 4pp. 8vo.,"Cherry Grove, [Ohio], July 3, 1864," to his soldier brother, in small part: "-Dr. Metz told me that you could get out of the service on account of that disease - try for a discharge. If you can that will enable you to get an exemption for the next pending draft as the $300 clause is stricken out - Metz says he will state the facts to your surgeon and is confident you will get off. He says there is more men exempted on this plea than any other - if you had not been swore into the United States service you might be home now as there is several companies at home now that did not take the oath - P. S. June [July] 5th, 64. The $300 dollar clause is actually stricken out and a call for 500,000 men. So Jimmy play off and cheat old Abe out of your life - he seeks it with millions more in order to free half amount of Slaves. Jimmy do try for an exempt it will be as good as half an exempt from Col. Jones - C. C. Johnson." Also included is the original stamped transmittal cover addressed: "Mr. James O. Johnson, Washington City, Ft. Craig, Arlington Heights, 138th Regt. O. N. G. in care of Capt. Kline." Light soiling, else VG.
