A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James O. Johnson, Co. H, 138th Ohio Vols., "On Board the good ship Constitution with her bow turned down stream towards Fortress Monroe which will be 100 miles near to home, July 16, 1864," written to his wife, in part: "the rebs - have a battery below us but we hope to get past it safely. They did not fire on boats yesterday but the day before they taped several - we are now going to - guard prisoners -Jas. O. Johnson. [Dear brother] Chris, I wrote you concerning the substitute you - know what the urgency of the case is. I should have liked to have been out of this scrape before I appropriated money for the purpose. I suppose you can make an arrangement with him if anything should happen [to] me that he would not demand the money from my family - do as you think best to make everything right. If he were not in too big a hurry and the draft did not take place too soon perhaps I might get home in time. If you could hire him conditionally - Jas. O. Johnson." Minor soiling, else VG
