A good war-date Union soldier's letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. James O. Johnson, Co. H, 138th Ohio Vols., "Cherry Stone Point on the shores of Cape Charles, July 19, 1864," written to his wife, in part: "-pray for your unworthy husband Mary, that Grace and strength may be mine to help me through this trial of separation and toil of a soldier's life. These counties of Virginia this side of the [Chesapeake] Bay are loyal and of course we are in no danger of shot and shell as we were when in the rear of Petersburg. The roar of war is no more - James O. Johnson. [Brother] Cris, If you can get that man [substitute] to wait [on] his money for me to return. I wish you would try. If I should not get home the money would do good for my family - tis not necessary for him to go into the service until I am out. I should not fear much if I was home - I would stand an exemption - as I am not fit -for a soldier. Jas. O. Johnson." Minor soiling, else VG.
