Union soldier's war-date letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Marcus Walker, Co. E, 141st New York Vols., "Marlborough, [Marlboro, Maryland] Oct. 19, 1862," to his parents, reading in part: "-I have the pleasure of helping caught a rebel. He came in town the same night - he was at Washington - we surrounded the house where he was - in the morning search the house - found him up [in the] garret. He was armed with a large Colt's Revolver. The women there was awful mad about our taking him. After we had taken him they said that they was all Secesh there. They say the man is in the rebel army - the draft came off here the 15th. there was 525 men drafted out of 19 hundred names. The way that they drafted was that they put them all in a box and shook them up together - the first 525 names was the drafted men. I have not heard much about the draft in York state - the night we caught the rebel - it rained part of the time - we was lying on the ground without O. coats or blankets - there is a part of another company here now. The occupy the Methodist church while we take the court house - we have got a house close by - for the cooking department - I and three more of the boys went down to the Patuxent River yesterday. It is about 2 1/2 miles. There was two schooners there. I saw one of them start off and coming back. We confiscated a hen and roasted it. We tried to get a turkey but we could not. We shoot at some but our guns shoot over at a short distance. Our hen over a regular old Muffled chops - M. B. Walker." Also included is the original transmittal cover. Some toning, else VG.
