Union soldier's war-date letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Marcus Walker, Co. E, 141st New York Vols., Arlington Heights, March 13, 1863, to his parents, reading in part: "-we have to go on guard as pickets every other day - there is one case of the small pox in our regiment that is in Co. F. His name to [Pvt. John B.] Swain. The way he caught it was that he stole a blanket from a tent where they had it and removed the patients. [They] came back to burn the blankets and they was gone. They have taken him off in a field in a tent by himself - our major [John W.] Dininny has got a colonel's commission. The Rebel raid at Fairfax Court House was about ten miles from us. They are mighty careful not ot get near the 141st - quite a number of our Regt. [are] detailed to work on a fort. There is some talk of our Regt. being transferred to Heavy Artillery and being stationed in a fort - I would rather be in artillery than infantry - Mark Walker." An original patriotic transmittal cover is included. Minor toning, else VG.
