A great war-date New York state home front (partial) letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by the sister of Pvt. Marcus Walker, Co. E, 141st New York Vols., Haskinsville, [New York], May 22, 1863, " - you are getting pretty near the heart of the rebellion. I hope you may escape the battles, but I am afraid you will have to fight. You are getting near the rebus. William Hammond [Co. K, 107th New York] and Sam Smith [Pvt. Samuel Smith, Co. K, 86th New York] was wounded in the [Second] battle at Fredericksburg. Henry Sprague [Pvt. George Henry Sprague, Co. D, 86th New York] was shot through his foot and they think taken prisoner as he has not been heard from and the rebus occupied the ground he was last seen on only a few minutes after - Mehala Hammond is living with me this summer - baby is well and grows fat everyday. You want to know his name. Well we talk of calling him James, - Martin, Abner, Elroy now which do you think is the prettiest. We went to Avoca - on purpose to get his likeness to send to you but Wagoner's tools was out of repair so he couldn't take it. People about here are talking of the draft. Some say they wont go if they are drafted. Others will pay their three hundred dollars rather than to go -". Unsigned, partial letter with great content. Overall VG. 100-200
