Union soldier's war-date letter, 4pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. Marcus Walker, Co. E, 141st New York Vols., Diascund Creek, [Chickahominy river, Va.], June 16, 1863, to his parents, reading in part: "-there has been a couple of sad accidents happened in our regt. today. [Sgt. Samuel] Ed Rider is drowned. He was swimming this morning and got in a deep hole and could not swim. He was under water almost all day. A boy from our Co. got him out. They [looked] for him all day before they found him. He looks hard I tell you - we are in close proximity with the rebus. We received heavy marching orders the 9 inst. to leave Yorktown - encamped near Williamsburg, Va. We remained there one day - we stopped in the woods - we had fun confiscating. We got a lot of mules, ham, corn etc. - a squad went out in the night and searched a house. Got a lot of corn. I got a Richmond paper - the next day at noon we fell in and marched (our regt. was skirmishers) marched from six to 18 miles. There was a few rebus here, but they skedaddled - they have scout out all around us here and the bush whackers keep a pecking us off every chance they can get. There was a man shot in Co. I today through the head. He lived but three hours. [Pvt. David McCann] There has been quite a number of our cavalry pickets shot and we have caught a number of the rascals. We found some reb letters when we came here - Col. Dininni [John W. Dininny] has resigned and Logie [William K. Logie, KIA Peach Tree Creek, Ga., 7/20/64] is in command of the Regt. - don't be uneasy about me for I am tuff but not [?] be unto a bush whacker if I see him in the bushes - Mark Walker." An original cover is included. Negligible spotting, else VG.
