Union soldier's battle letter, 2pp. 8vo., written by Pvt. David McCleary, [POW Wilderness, Va., May 6, 1863], Co. D, 43rd New York Vols., "Camp near Brandy Station," [Va.], Dec. 16, 1863 to James Walker, the father of Pvt. Marcus Walker, Co. E, 141st New York Vols., reading in part: "-please let me know if Mary Jane has received that 20.00 I have sent by express. We are in winter quarters - our campaigning is over until spring - I suppose you have read in the papers that little affair we had at Rappahannock Station. Our Corps done all the fighting. We captured 2000 prisoners and - drove them into the river. It was a most complete victory also we march across the Rapidan. The Second Corps principally done the fighting there - the whole army would have attacked them but there position was impenetrable. We were all rejoiced to to hear of Grant's great success in the southeast - David McCleary." Also included is the original "Due 3" transmittal cover that is endorsed by Major John Fryer mortally wounded in action during the battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864. He died six days later on May 12, 1864. Both near fine.
